It is true that there is no concrete data source from which reliable deductions can be made. It is also true that when saying who is richer, you could be asking any of three things;
Which population has the highest number of High Net Worth Individuals
When the wealth of the High Net Worth Individuals of the various zones are summed and compared, which has the highest figure.
Which of the populations has the highest standard of living for the average member of the demographic.
No. 1 and 2. goes to the North. Easily. This is due primarily to a colorful presence of Northern proponents in Nigeria’s military history. As a result, there are more oil-blocks allocated to northerners. There are also more Northerners holding politically sensitive offices. This gives them a vast access to free money unlike any other ethnic group. Not to say that there are not people from other zones that have oil-blocks or that everyone from the North is a rich oil-magnate or politician.
To answer #3: after studying the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) 2017 briefing on Global Multidimensional Poverty Index, the richest would have to be the Yoruba as the Southwest had the most impressive report.
I appreciate that these results will be grossly underwhelming to some readers due to stark contrast to reality. Hey, it is what it is.
