Summary
The Croatians were first out of the blocks in the first half of their opening game against Nigeria where the Super Eagles who looked a lot more composed than their first half performance against England at Wembley, still fell to their nemesis – set-pieces.
Expectedly, Croatia dominated possession as both sides sized each other up cautiously, in the open exchanges but neither was able to create many major clear-cut chances; the only real threat coming from Kramaric’s drive from distance which went just over. But eventually, Nigeria capitulated. Moments after Ante Rebic’s deflected strike goes out for a corner, Croatia grab the opener courtesy of an own goal by Oghenekaro Etebo who fails to clear Mandzukic’s diving header and it ends up in the net.
Moments
17′ Andrej Kramaric takes aim from distance – but his strike drifts just over the upright.
32′ GOAL! Croatia 1-0 Nigeria. A corner from right is flicked on towards Mario Mandzukic, whose header, which appeared to be going wide, came off the leg of Oghenekaro Etebo into the net.
